The mossy fountain

A true mascot of the city, the Moussue Fountain already existed in the 16th century, a great place for walks and meetings of the Salonais people who came to enjoy the coolness, this Place des arbres, nowadays Place Crousillat, was already decorated with a fountain in the 16th century.

Decided in 1765 by the consuls of the city, the current Great Fountain was built by the sculptor Maurice Bernus in 1775.

Hidden in the hollow of the moss that earned it its nickname, this fountain-drinking trough during the Transhumance is surmounted by two basins. Limestone concretions have developed, welding the two basins together as well as the moss and vegetation that give it its particular shape today.

Castle of the empéri

Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Crau plain, the Castle of the Empéri is the oldest fortified castle in Provence still standing and one of the three largest (along with the Popes' Palace in Avignon and King René's castle in Tarascon).

Built in the 10th century, it was the residence of the archbishops of Arles as well as the Germanic emperors. It is from there that it takes its name (Empéri meaning empire in Provençal). With Nostradamus and the historic center, it has become a symbol of the city and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

This castle has been classified as a historical monument since September 10, 1956. It houses the Army Museum, the Salon and Crau Museum and the Nostradamus Garden of Simples.
